OS X (Mac) Mail is receiving mail, but not sending

After changing (and changing back) my smtp settings in OS X Mail with 10.6 I suddenly could no longer send mail.
I confirmed and re-confirmed and confirmed again that all of the settings were correct.

THE FIX:

Open Mail Preferences and go to accounts.
Go to Edit SMTP Server List…
Delete All items in this list.
Back out of the preferences.
Quit [...]
