If God speaks to us from the Bible, why not memorize it?

I believe that the Bible is God’s letter to me. I understand that this is hard to believe and could be construed as “narrow minded” in this generation of information and knowledge. Regardless, this is what I believe and if this be the case than why in the world would I not memorize it the best I can?
I say this because the group of men I meet with on a regular basis challenged me and each other to memorize Romans 12 recently. As I work on this memorization I am discovering that the scripture comes alive after the rote memory process falls away.
Romans 12 and some things that now stand out to me…
I have only the first 5 verses so far, but it’s still the first 5 verses. NKJV
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
3 For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. 4 For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, 5 so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.
